DISASTER FLOOD RECOVERY

Waynesboro, TN Feb 2-5, 2005

The VIM Team’s work task was to rehabilitate two homes in Waynesboro, TN that were heavily damaged by the November 2004 flooding of Green River. To accomplish these tasks the Team was split into three work groups. The first group (Ed Sattler, Derith Adams, Shirley Christensen and Marty Wennermark) were responsible for the dry wall finishing in both the Regina & Mike Boyd house and Katherine White house. New dry wall was taped, mudded and sanded in preparation for painting.

The second group (Jim Legg and Jerry Thomas) set and shimmed five windows and 11 doors being replaced in the Boyd house. The third group (Howard Robb, Chris Christensen, Don Kenne, Max Mayo, Vince Richardson, Chuck Scott and Paul Wennermark) began the job of replacing some undelayment floor boards and all new plywood sub-flooring. Dry wall was hung on all but two exterior walls, the latter having to wait for additional drying. One final task was also completed on the White home of tree trimming and brush removal for better air circulation to improve house dry-out.

Good Christian fellowship might best describe the main purpose of this Volunteers In Mission trip. The many elements of this fellowship included: daily morning devotions, meal time and sharing time with team members and our gracious food and lodging hosts from the Waynesboro 1st UMC.

Individual team member expenses were minimal and absorbed by team members. FFG-UMC Mission funds paid (approx $1200) for purchase of dry wall, lumber and other miscellaneous supplies purchased in Waynesboro.

Persons responsible for project planning and leadership included: Rev. Max Mayo (FFG-

UMC), Rev. Jim Kayler (Waynesboro 1st UMC) and Rev. David Lay (Pulaski District Disaster Response Coordinator). Many thanks are given to all the VIM team members who generously donated their time, energy and use of tools to be a part of God’s mission and ministry in flood ravaged Waynesboro, Tennessee. Thanks also to the many members of the Fairfield Glade UMC and Waynesboro 1st UMC who gave additional support to this Volunteers In Mission Team.
