VOLUNTEERS IN MISSION (VIM) – TRIP REPORT

OCTOBER 16 – OCTOBER 22, 2005

RED BIRD MISSION WORK CAMP – BEVERLY, KENTUCKY

The VIM Team’s mission task was to choose, pay for and complete several projects that involved working on community housing, Campus projects, Buildings and Grounds or maintenance.  To accomplish these tasks the Team was split into five work groups.  The first group (Tom Bowman – Supv, Paul Wennermark, Len Stark, Shirley Christensen, and Andrea Legg) were given the tasks of re-flooring the front porch, replacing rails, steps and lattice and replacing siding on back of home and insulating and painting same, at the James Holland residence in the Bowen’s Creek area.

The second group (Don Kenne – Supv, Chuck Scott, Charlene Richardson, Nancy Hartman) installed, mudded, sanded and prepared for painting, 27 sheets of dry-wall in the residence of Kenneth Griffitts.

The third group (Jim Legg – Supv, Rich Dendler, Diana Sharp, Marty Wennermark) were put on a task of replacing five windows and a rear door at the home of Edward Bowling in the Big Creek area.

The fourth group (Larry Tonkel – Supv, Vince Richardson, Frankie Dendler, Pat Scott) replaced a broken window, painted the exterior of a room addition, replaced living room linoleum and installed carpet in a hallway and bedroom.

The fifth group (Larry Hartman – Supv, Chris Christensen, Pat Tonkel, Carolyn Karl) worked on the Queendale Campus painting the covered walkway from Kramer Bldg to Mission Office Bldg and painted the exterior of the Boys Dormitory.

As was true of last year, good Christian fellowship describes the main purpose of this Volunteers In Mission trip.  The many elements of this fellowship included: daily morning chapel time, mealtime with other staff and team members, interaction with community members being helped, nighttime activities of orientation to the Red Bird Mission, nightly bonfires and horse shoe pitching, daily sharing times, Wednesday tour day, Thursday talent night and a final Friday night of Communion, hymn singing and worship.

Project costs budgeted from FFG-UMC mission funds and VIM team member contributions were $7,730.  This figure included $3,230 toward project materials and supplies with the balance going toward team expenses for food, lodging and transportation.

Consensus of VIM Team members was so positive on the ministry of Red Bird Mission and on the mission experience, that discussions started before the end of the week about a return to Red Bird Mission in 2006.
